Commentary

This is the ideal film for couples to watch together when compromise is necessary. It’s not a great rom-com nor will it become a legend in the annals of action films. But when he wants violence and gun play and she wants to watch a relationship grow and blossom, Mr. Right just might bridge the gap.

Mr. Right - Blu-Ray Movie Review

Anna Kendrick, who you’ll recognize from the Twilight films, is her usual chatty and bubbly self. Her improvisational style is decent, though I found myself wishing for the action after a few minutes. There’s plenty of that to be had as well thanks to Sam Rockwell’s slapstick-worthy performance. The fight scenes are nicely choreographed with a complete lack of loyalty to physics or reality. That’s OK though because it makes them highly entertaining.

Mr. Right - Blu-Ray Movie Review

The concept is good and the execution isn’t bad but there are flaws. Chemistry is lacking between Francis and Martha for one. It is fun to watch her transition from wallflower to criminal however. But in general, the plot is pretty thin. It’s mostly a vehicle for a script that sounds improvised; almost as if the actors were making most of it up as they went along. Tim Roth rarely disappoints and I enjoyed his laid-back drawl as he switched effortlessly between British and Southern-hick accents.

If you’re looking for a fun comedy that mixes elements of romance, comedy and action; Mr. Right is certainly worth a viewing. You may not return to it a second time but it certainly won’t ruin your evening.

Technical

I saw no significant issues with the video transfer quality. Color remains natural without any unexpected hues added in post-production. Contrast is very deep with great blacks, shadow detail and bright well-defined highlights. Detail is also top-notch in both close-up shots and wide angle views.

Mr. Right - Blu-Ray Movie Review

The DTS-HD Master Audio encode is presented in a 5.1 format with good balance, impact and clarity. Dialog is always clear and well-centered. Surround effects are many and frequent and my sub got a decent workout during the intense scenes.

Extras

Universal shows this release no love with a mere one minute and nine second feature where Anna Kendrick talks briefly about the film’s plot.
