Commentary
This one doesn’t break any new ground but thankfully the strength of the ensemble case keep it from being a complete bore. The story, while a bit too by the book, has enough heart and laughs to keep you interested but its great characters make it genuinely touching when it needs to be. At the end of the day a film like this will either tug at your heart strings or make you roll your eyes with its emotion and obvious lines. I found it fun and touching but I could see it going either way for anyone really.
Technical
The video presentation is about what I would expect from this type of film. Nothing stands out too much and the photography of the film seems to play it safe. Some light compression artifacts do creep into backgrounds but only if you’re really looking for it. Detail is decent overall but not quite reference worthy. The color palette has a very natural look to it and I didn’t notice any objectionable post processing work.
The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix is also a by the numbers mix with just about the whole soundtrack placed front and center. The surrounds add a touch of ambience but little separation is heard. Dialogue is nicely balanced within the mix, which is all you can ask for from a film like this. The score opens up the soundstage on occasion and cues you in to exactly what the moment is trying to convey.
Extras
Extras are limited to some deleted scenes and outtakes and a few trailers for other upcoming Warner releases.
