This feels like the future of integrated amplifiers.

I was fresh off reviewing the Rotel S14 Streaming Amplifier. So, I pretty much knew what to expect. But as soon as I unboxed the Technics, I immediately knew that this was a step up. And that it might be a keeper.

Technics Network Audio Amplifier SU-GX70

Introduction

The Technics SU-GX70 is a streaming amplifier that is said to retain the ‘sonic genes’ of Technics Grand Class components. It’s a fully loaded amplifier that includes connections for not just traditional audio sources, but video-based ones in the form of HDMI ARC as well.

This features:

  • Full Digital Amp, JENO Engine (Jitter Elimination and Noise-shaping Optimization).
  • Twin Power Supply Circuit System.
  • Ideal Impulse Response through LAPC (Load Adaptive Phase Calibration).
  • Pure Amplification Mode.
  • High-quality Audio through Low-impact HDMI Video Output.
  • Radio, analog input (PHONO(MM)/LINE), optical digital input (such as TV), coaxial digital input, and USB input.

I don’t pretend to know what all of what I just read is. And I’m not going to attempt to explain it here. You can read about it on the Technics website where they do a much better job of explaining it.

Needless to say, it’s a fully digital amplifier.

It’s a digital transmission system that processes signals fully digitally in all stages from input to output.

Compared to analog transmission, this system is less susceptible to signal degradation caused by external noise, ensuring more precise signal transmission.

This JENO Engine has also been used in the HDMI ARC input, a first in a Technics product. This helps to reduce any degradation in sound quality caused by jitter during the transmission of digital audio signals (S/PDIF), ensuring unparalleled levels of clarity in TV audio.

Got it? Cool. Me too, I think.

There’s more of course. There’s:

  • Load Adaptive Phase Calibration (LAPC).
  • Twin Power Supply Circuit System.
  • Pure amplification Mode which turns off the power supply to the Network and HDMI for even more clarity.
  • Analogue Input Using Discrete Amp Circuits.

This is 40W into 8 Ohms and 80 into 4.

Frequency response is:

  • 20Hz – 20kHz for Phono
  • 20Hz – 40kHz for Line
  • 20 Hz – 80khz for digital

For inputs you get 2 analog, 1 moving magnet phono, 2 Optical, 1 Coaxial, 1 USB A, 1 USB B, Preouts, HDMI ARC, 1/4″ Headphone Output, and Ethernet

I should note that the Techinics team has enabled the HDMI ARC in this amp to somehow mitigate the video signal preventing any unwanted noise or distortion in the audio.

You also get Wi-Fi, Chromecast, Airplay 2, Tidal, Deezer, Qobuz, Spotify, Amazon, Bluetooth, an FM Tuner, and MQA Decoder.

And lest I forget tone controls!

That’s a lot of stuff packed in here. And therefore, it makes sense that it retails at $1999.95 USD.
