GOOVIS G3 Max 3D Head Mounted Display Preview

It’s a 3D-capable wearable OLED TV.

GOOVIS is a lesser-known player in the virtual reality display genre, but they have quietly risen in the ranks with high performance and solid value. I’ll be reviewing their flagship product, the G3 Max 3D Head Mounted Display. It’s a wearable headset display with 5K resolution (two times 2560 x 1440), OLED technology, 3,528ppi pixel density, 3D support, and integrated audio. The $1,199 top-of-the-line package has everything you need to start watching, including an Android TV dongle. It’s all powered by a three- hour battery, so you aren’t tethered to a wall outlet. You can also connect it to other streaming boxes or a disc player.

I was recently approached by a new company, new to me anyway, to review their G3 Max 3D Head Mounted Display. While I am familiar with VR goggles and headsets, I had never actually evaluated one. When I learned it used Micro OLED technology, my reply was an instant and enthusiastic, yes!

I received a box full of parts consisting of the flagship kit with the G3 Max display, Android dongle, battery, and an HDMI converter. I also got extras, namely a rigid headband for greater comfort and an extra battery pack. All told, it would sell for $1,357, or less than half the price of an Apple Vision Pro.

The OLEDs are QHD resolution (2560 x 1440), and 0.83 inches diagonally, which gives them a tremendous 3,528ppi pixel density. The viewing angle is IMAX territory, 65 degrees, which is enough to encompass nearly all my peripheral vision. The G3 Max also supports 3D Blu-ray in side-by-side and frame pack formats, and I can’t wait to watch Avatar.

The headset includes high-quality optics with diopter dials for each eye and a pupil distance adjustment. Unlike the Vision Pro, you won’t need custom lenses installed if you wear glasses as I do. I was able to see a sharp and bright image in just a few minutes.

I have no frame of reference for this review as it is my first experience with a wearable display. But since it’s billed as a personal home theater, I’ll be comparing the experience to what I’ve seen from the hundreds of TVs and projectors that have spent time in my theater and living room.
