Telluride Film Festival 2015

Telluride Film Festival 2015

There was a great lineup of films at this year’s Telluride. Among them were two music documentaries that were filmed in the 1970’s but have barely seen the light of day in the forty-some years since. One of them vanished back into the darkness on opening day however. At the press conference at 1:00 pm on the Friday...

Show Report: Head-Fi Meet, July 18, 2015

The Head-Fi Meet took place on July 18, 2015, held at the DoubleTree Hotel, in Burlingame, California. For those not familiar with the Head-Fi group, they are companies and individuals (DIY) who manufacture or build (one person making his own by hand) headphone amplifiers, and companies who also market headphones. They are a very special group of people, with innovation and dedication to extreme high quality.

Telluride Film Festival 2014

This was my 13th straight year at the Telluride Film Festival and I was more excited than ever. The story leading up to the festival was the "land grab" by the Toronto Film Festival. The Toronto fest immediately follows Telluride each year. And while Telluride can best be thought of as the Labor Day barbeque for Hollywood and film lovers...

The Secrets Salon Presentation – March 1 and 2, 2014

On March 1 and 2, 2014, Secrets hosted a Salon Presentation as part of our 20th Anniversary Celebration of publishing. The presentation consisted of three rooms containing state-of-the-art equipment, both solid state and tube, and both two-channel and home theater. It was a resounding success, with attendees stating that they had never heard such fantastic sound, and were totally unaware that certain items even existed. The Secrets Editor, John Johnson, presented all of the equipment, with CD, SACD, DVD-A, as well as vinyl and Blu-ray movies in the home theater room. The attendees were people who don't attend audio shows, but who want to have good quality components and are unable to find local shops that can demonstrate the products. The success of the Salon Presentation indicates that this may be a way of bringing new members into our audiophile community. The manufacturers are more than willing to put in their products. Some of our readers around the world need only invite them to participate in your own presentation, and consumers will come.

Sundance Film Festival 2014

As in previous years it became just a little more difficult to get tickets.  But, I am less and less concerned about this since it forces us into more offbeat movies. I enjoyed all the movies we saw this year but in many cases that is simply because it was a film at Sundance. Some of them were surprisingly bad. I'll try to point those out in my reviews.

CES 2014 Final Thoughts

CES 2014 has come and gone, or in process of being gone with the breakdown of the many exhibits…..the attendance made even the Las Vegas Convention Center seem almost too small! The weather on the East Coast and Midwest really played havoc with many, we understand that many hotel rooms ended up empty, but sure did not seem like it! It is always a madhouse, but also good to catch up with so many friends.
