Cold Pursuit – 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Synopsis

Liam Neeson plays Nels Coxman, a snowplow operator whose son is killed in the opening scene of the film. Nels decides that he’s going to take out the drug kingpin, Viking, who he feels is ultimately responsible for his son’s death. In order to identify and locate the drug lord, Nels must interrogate (and kill) Viking’s lower associates one at a time. The closer Nels gets to Viking, the more violent and unexpected things become.

Commentary

In reading the synopsis it would be easy to think that Cold Pursuit is a re-branded Taken. I personally though that before I pressed “play”. That impression in and of itself is a disservice to Cold Pursuit which has its own tone and unique plot that set it apart. Cold Pursuit has some macabre comical scenes that are quite refreshing and I think the movie would have been improved if the producers had focused more on that vein. In any event, the movie is certainly fun and entertaining. To me, the plot was a little too winnowy to keep me fully engaged and in the end that was its biggest downfall in my view. It is still a strong rental recommendation for a dark and stormy night.

Technical

The video presentation is a 4K transfer at 2.39:1. The image pops nicely on bright scenes with lots of detail to enjoy. The high dynamic range lends excellent gray scale tracking in the darker scenes. Color fidelity is apparently excellent and true to the film makers’ intent. I am only awarding four stars though as the image was solid but nothing spectacular.

This is another excellent Dolby Atmos audio track. Voice intelligibility is excellent. The musical score is passed along with wonderful fidelity. The height channels are used sparingly, engaging mostly in action sequences and in outdoor scenes. This is a very workmanlike audio presentation that meets minimum expectations.
