LG HU70LA 4K UHD LED Projector Preview

See the complete review for the LG HU70LAB 4K UHD LED Projector.

LG has packed a full-fledged television into a compact DLP projector, the HU70LA 4K UHD LED Projector to be exact.

It boasts Ultra HD resolution with XPR technology, extended color, HDR and a full suite of streaming apps from LG’s tried-and-true webOS interface. Oh, and there’s one more thing – a DTV tuner; that’s a first in my experience.

There are plenty of compact DLP projectors in the under $2000 price segment, so LG sets itself apart by including the full functionality of a flat panel TV in a seven-pound chassis. Available in white or black, this diminutive box has a pair of speakers, two HDMI 2.0 inputs (one with ARC), two USB inputs, USB-C and a coax input for its internal DTV tuner. You can connect either a roof antenna for over-the-air HD or a cable drop from your local provider. The HU70LA can scan your channels while it also connects to your home network via hardwire or Wi-Fi to offer content from just about anywhere.

Videophiles will enjoy its calibration suite with 2, 11 and 20-point grayscale, and full-color management. Independent adjustments are available for HDR signals which are supported by the HDR10 spec. To improve the dynamic range, the HU70LA features dynamic tone mapping on a frame-by-frame basis. This is a new feature in projectors that goes a long way toward equalizing their quality with premium flat panels.

My first impressions are overwhelmingly positive. The image looks great with razor-sharp detail and saturated color. Much of that is due to the light source which is four-channel LED rather than a traditional UHP lamp. That means a 30,000-hour maintenance-free lifespan and no color wheel.

Chris Eberle

Chris' passion for audio began when he took up playing the bassoon at age 12. During his third year at the New England Conservatory of Music, he won a position with the West Point Band where he served for 26 years as principal bassoonist. He retired from the Army in 2013 and is now writing full time and performing as a freelance musician in Central Florida. As an avid movie lover, Chris was unable to turn away the 50-inch Samsung DLP TV that arrived at his door one day, thus launching him irrevocably into an obsession with home theater. Dissatisfied with the image quality of his new acquisition, Chris trained with the Imaging Science Foundation in 2006 and became a professional display calibrator. His ultimate theater desires were realized when he completed construction of a dedicated cinema/listening room in his home. Chris is extremely fortunate that his need for quality audio and video is shared and supported by his wife of over 25 years. In his spare time he enjoys riding his recumbent trike at least 100 miles per week, trying out new restaurants, going to theme parks and spending as much time as possible watching movies and listening to music. Chris enjoys bringing his observations and discoveries about every kind of home theater product to as many curious and well-informed readers as possible. He is proud to be a part of the Team and hopes to help everyone enjoy their AV experiences to the fullest.
