While many of their speakers have achieved iconic status (Nautilus, I’m thinking of you), I recently received something a bit different from the team at B&W – their recently released Formation Bar and Formation Bass module. Created to appeal to a more modern audience, the new Formation line is designed for a connected, wireless world, eschewing traditional connectivity options in exchange for an IP/app-based experience. The Formation Bar is a three-channel soundbar unit (left, center, right), consisting of nine separate drivers while the Formation Bass is a neat little can-style subwoofer sporting two opposing drivers.
The Formation Bar and Bass module start impressing you the moment they come out of their well-designed packages. Both products sport a very cool industrial design and exhibit excellent build quality. Setup is an absolute breeze via the Formation app (available for both iOS and Android) and I was up in running in less than ten minutes. While there are some surprising product design decisions that limit the functionality of the Formation Bar and Bass module, my initial listening sessions have been very promising. Does the overall sound quality of the B&W Formation Bar and Bass outshine these design quirks? Check out my full review coming soon.
