Trainwreck – Blu-Ray Movie Review

Synopsis

Since she was a little girl, Amy (Amy Schumer) has been taught that monogamy isn’t realistic. Now a magazine writer, Amy lives by that credo, enjoying an uninhibited life free from stifling, boring romantic commitment. But when she finds herself starting to fall for the subject of a new article she’s writing, a charming and successful sports doctor (Bill Hader), Amy starts to wonder if other grown-ups, including this guy who really seems to like her, might be onto something.

Commentary

Amy Schumer wrote the screen play to this, her first film endeavor, and I must say, it was not a dreadful as I anticipated. Is she crude, rude and lewd? Yes, but she still manages to create a character that is funny, realistic and likable. There are a few cameo roles for some famous athletes and even Matthew Broderick shows up in a scene near the end. The plot has been rehashed many times before: a free spirit meets an uptight nerdy guy, they fall in love, have a big fight which leads to a split and then a happy make up session at the end. Still, as well worn as that formula may be, it always seems to work. Amy has great comedic chops and her foil (Hader) makes a fine opposite for her affectionate attention. The movie is a bit long at over two hours and the “unrated” version adds a whole four more minutes. Just as a warning, there are several “F-bombs” in just the first 4 minutes of this flick and if seeing John Cena’s finely chiseled, muscular buttocks offends you, you might want to steer clear of this flick. I, on the other hand, was glad I stayed to the end and was entertained along the way. I’d be interested in seeing if she follows up on this debut. You Go, Amy!

Technical

The picture and sound are excellent, though the surrounds and sub are somewhat muted. Dialog is clear and centered as it should be with a dialog driven script. I noticed no digital artifacts our crushing of the shadows in the darker night scenes. As the movie unfolds, you just forget about the “effects” and watch the characters as they do their stuff. That’s how it is supposed to work.

Jim Milton

Jim Milton has been interested in high fidelity since his college years in the late 70's. It was there that he first became interested in classical music. He has been part of choral music, both in opera and oratorio and is an avid collector of classical music from the Baroque through the Romantic periods. He enjoys an occasional night at Boston Symphony Hall or attending an organ concert at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, ME. Currently he is the director of Nuclear Medicine at the North Shore Medical Center, located just outside of Boston. He also serves as an adjunct professor for Salem State University where he teaches a course in nuclear instrumentation. During his leisure time, he enjoys listening to his music collection and an occasional movie with his wife of 30+ years. Living on the longest stretch of sandy beach north of Boston offers him plenty of opportunities to take a relaxing stroll or soak up some sun.
