Daddy’s Home 2- 4K UHD Blu-ray Movie Review

Synopsis

If you liked the first film, this one builds upon it with even more laughs as we find that having finally gotten used to each other’s existence, Brad and Dusty (Wahlberg and Ferrell) must now deal with their intrusive fathers (Gibson and Lithgow) during the holidays. It’s the nerds versus the macho men, but if the family is going to hold together, compromise may be the thing under the Christmas tree they all need the most.

Commentary

You would think that having all of this “talent” in one movie would be a recipe for success, but that is not the case. Though I found this outing to be better than the original, this is not saying much. I enjoyed that the movie was shot in my New England neighborhood more than the actual plot. By adding visiting grandparents, it actually muddies the waters for Ferrell and Wahlberg and make a lot of what’s going on in the movie feel like a joke that has gone on for a little too long to be funny. Ferrell makes a great lovable loser, but the rest of the cast are uninspired and feel like they are there for the cash grab. Did you know that Gibson (dad) is only 15 years older than Wahlberg (son)? Let that thought sink in while watching this flick. Mel looks like he was ridden hard, folded and put away wet.

Technical

Shot with an Arri Alexa at 3.8K, a 2K Di was used for the disc. The picture generally looks sharp with some nice primary color pop and close-up details that look great. Contrast is good, to great…especially evening shots. Except for these few instances, the picture quality is not that much more of a noticeable improvement over the BD version, but with either version the sound and picture are certainly enjoyable to watch.

Jim Milton

Jim Milton has been interested in high fidelity since his college years in the late 70's. It was there that he first became interested in classical music. He has been part of choral music, both in opera and oratorio and is an avid collector of classical music from the Baroque through the Romantic periods. He enjoys an occasional night at Boston Symphony Hall or attending an organ concert at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, ME. Currently he is the director of Nuclear Medicine at the North Shore Medical Center, located just outside of Boston. He also serves as an adjunct professor for Salem State University where he teaches a course in nuclear instrumentation. During his leisure time, he enjoys listening to his music collection and an occasional movie with his wife of 30+ years. Living on the longest stretch of sandy beach north of Boston offers him plenty of opportunities to take a relaxing stroll or soak up some sun. "Remember, acquiring good A/V gear takes lots of time...but doesn't necessarily take lots of money."
