Dan (Black) is the head of the high school reunion committee and has very few real friends. Basically, he is a frustrated loser, and has been since high school. When the attendance of this year’s reunion is projected to be very low he begins to look for ways entice his former classmates back. When he sees an old classmate in a TV ad, he decides that if he can get Oliver (Marsden) to go to the reunion, everyone else will follow. He goes to LA to meet him, after telling and bringing his boss that this trip is a business trip, and from there things go south quickly. Turns out that Oliver is a loser, too, and can’t find an acting job in L.A..This is a movie that is a departure from Black’s usual films and it more of a dark dramedy, than light hearted comedy. He has an un-funny homosexual incident with Marsden character that almost ruins his reputation and strains his standing with his wife. His boss feels betrayed and duped, with his business almost destroyed. His relationship with his son is upended. The movie does have a couple of funny moments, but there are some very dark and dramatic elements to this which left me feeling sad for Dan. The trailer makes it look more comical than it really is and Oliver is not to blame for Dan’s sad life choices. Somehow most of the issues all get resolved and Dan comes out ahead because of the notoriety he achieves. But seriously, all of this for a high school reunion? Why care?

There is excellent picture quality overall and good contrast in the night scenes. Skin tones are good with well saturated colors, even in the night life scenes. Sound is uniformly good, though not a lot of deep bass or surround action. Dialog is clear and well centered on the screen.

Jim Milton

Jim Milton has been interested in high fidelity since his college years in the late 70's. It was there that he first became interested in classical music. He has been part of choral music, both in opera and oratorio and is an avid collector of classical music from the Baroque through the Romantic periods. He enjoys an occasional night at Boston Symphony Hall or attending an organ concert at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, ME. Currently he is the director of Nuclear Medicine at the North Shore Medical Center, located just outside of Boston. He also serves as an adjunct professor for Salem State University where he teaches a course in nuclear instrumentation. During his leisure time, he enjoys listening to his music collection and an occasional movie with his wife of 30+ years. Living on the longest stretch of sandy beach north of Boston offers him plenty of opportunities to take a relaxing stroll or soak up some sun. "Remember, acquiring good A/V gear takes lots of time...but doesn't necessarily take lots of money."
