Commentary

This is a feel-good movie with a slightly dark undertone. The production team, directorial staff and the writers struck just the right balance between these disparate emotions and the story benefits tremendously. I fell in love with pretty much all the characters and wanted it to work out for each and every one of them. The production values of the movie are first rate as well. The image pops and the music reproduction is first-rate in every way imaginable. I will be using this as a demo disc for sure, but I may watch it a few more times just because. Highly recommended!

Technical

This is another bright and colorful animated movie that has a picture that really pops on Blu-ray. I’m sure I could find something to complain about if I looked for issues very closely. But I didn’t. It looked totally excellent on my Epson 1080p projector and I didn’t see anything untoward at all. Instead, I just sat back and enjoyed the movie in all its splendor. This movie is also available on 4k and I am very interested to check it out in that format when I get the chance.

The audio quality was also of the highest order. The voices were clear as a bell. The music was powerful, fleshed out and very dynamic. The audio effects were of equal quality. Add that it is presented in Dolby Atmos and the spatial reality of the audio was splendid. I know some may rate it down because they didn’t exercise the height channels with impunity but I personally felt that the use of height channels was appropriately reserved.

Extras

This is a two-disc set with the Blu-ray, a DVD and a Digital Streaming Code included. On-disc extras are plentiful and quite entertaining:

Three mini-movies – Gunter Babysits, Love at First Sight and Eddie’s Life Coach.

The Making of the Mini-Movies

Two music vides – "Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing" and "Faith".

As well as seven more mini features and making-of shorts. This is a very strong line-up of special features.

Jim Clements

Jim Clements has been an audio nut since childhood where you could find him underfoot at his local high end store on most weekends. (This particular shop was within walking distance of Jim's home, much to the chagrin of the owner and his staff.) Jim's audio journey started early because he loved great music of all kinds. And he still does. Like most audiophiles, Jim was not particularly inspired by a vast majority of the audio systems he encountered. So his quest grew through his efforts to recreate a live listening experience in the home. This has proven to be a never ending quest. One major offshoot of all this is that Jim has become something of a cinema enthusiast as well. So now he's working on the video and surround sound conundrums too. Since perfect recreation of sound and video is a goal to be pursued but never attained, Jim derives his pleasure from the journey itself. He wants to help our readers on their own personal quests by reviewing products thoroughly and objectively. On a personal note, Jim is a Professional Engineer, licensed in California and Texas. He currently has his own engineering practice in San Antonio, Texas. Jim is also part owner of a small chain of craft beer growler stations in South Texas.
