STOW, OH – Audio-Technica headphones and phono cartridges have been installed in the William Ralston Listening Library, a dedicated listening space and classical music archive located at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. The Library houses over 15,000 records, 14,000 CDs, plus rare scores and books about music, and includes a dedicated loudspeaker listening room, a headphones listening room and a 3,000-square-foot reading room.

At the time of his passing in 2003, the Rev. William Ralston had assembled one of the country’s most comprehensive private collections of classical music. His will expressed his wishes to create a learning and teaching facility at Sewanee, as the University of the South is familiarly known, and now his dream has become a reality. The acoustically-optimized listening rooms are equipped with an array of high-performance audio components, including Audio-Technica AT-OC9/ML/II Dual Moving MicroCoil™ and AT33EV Dual Moving Coil phono cartridges, ATH-M50 professional studio monitor headphones and ATH-AD700 audiophile open-air dynamic headphones.

“Our goal in building the William Ralston Listening Library was to create a facility where students and music lovers can hear the recordings in an optimal setting with realistic dynamics and ambience,” noted Thomas A. MacNab “Tam” Carlson, an English professor at Sewanee and the man who raised the funds and was the driving force in making the Library a reality. “We are gratified that Audio-Technica and others who are dedicated to preserving Father Ralston’s unique legacy helped make the Library a truly one-of-a-kind facility where people can listen to historic, rare and landmark recordings on the finest music playback equipment.”

The acoustically treated and isolated headphones and loudspeaker rooms provide a quiet, inviting listening environment with cherry-paneled walls, comfortable furniture – and rows upon rows of LPs, CDs, books and art, and other music-related materials.

The headphones room includes the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 and ATH-AD700 headphones and AT-OC9/ML/II and AT33EV phono cartridges, where visitors can listen to recordings on turntables, CD players and servers that deliver uncompressed digital music storage. The loudspeaker room features Wilson Audio Specialties Alexandria X-2 Series 2 speakers, Ayre Acoustics electronics and an array of additional ultimate-performance components.
