To complete my recent review of the Pro Cinema 6040UB projector, Epson provided me with Philips’ brand-new Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the BDP-7501.

This compact box plays every optical disc format except SACD and DVD Audio and most importantly, is the absolute best way to deliver Ultra HD content with High Dynamic Range and Rec.2020 color to your shiny new UHDTV or projector.

Philips BDP-7501 Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Upon unpacking this compact player, I couldn’t help but be reminded of an Apple TV. It’s larger than that puck-like device but with a flat top and rounded corners, all that’s missing is a picture of partially-eaten fruit on top. Speaking of the top, the power and eject buttons are up there. Coupled with the BDP-7501’s small size, you won’t be stacking any other components on it; except perhaps an Apple TV or Roku box. Contributing to that compact chassis is an external power supply which is something I don’t often see with AV components.

Philips BDP-7501 Ultra HD Blu-ray Player Inputs

Inputs are all-digital and thankfully, there is a secondary HDMI output so I’ll be able to hear sound when I watch movies through my old Integra 80.1 surround processor, which still rocks HDMI 1.3! After initial hookups were complete, I fired it up and was greeted with an intuitive quick setup routine. I connected to my WiFi network and ran through the audio and video options. It’s no different than installing a standard Blu-ray player except for the useful connection test which ensures your display and cabling are compatible and have sufficient bandwidth.

Since I still have the Epson Ultra HD-capable projector on hand, I’ll be watching a few high-res titles along with DVDs and standard Blu-rays which the player will upconvert to Ultra HD (3840×2160) resolution.
