I am a sucker for high-value, big bang-for-buck, home theater gear.

When I heard that Monoprice was releasing a lower-priced set of speakers under their well-regarded Monolith brand, I immediately requested a set to review.

Monoprice has been associated with low-priced A/V gear and accessories for many years. Their Monolith brand of home theater equipment stepped up in quality when it hit the market back in 2017. Until recently the only speakers in the Monolith lineup were THX-rated. With the release of the Encore series, with a floor-standing tower, center, and bookshelf models, the Monolith brand of A/V gear makes a serious entry in the budget speaker class.

Monoprice agreed to send a full 5.1 system including the C6 center, two B6 bookshelves, two T6 towers, and the latest version of their M-12 500 Watt, 12-inch THX Ultra rated Monolith subwoofer. This made for a nice “full package” system to review. Upon receiving the system I immediately replaced my front L/C/R with the Monolith B6 bookshelves and C6 center, to make as much of an “apples to apples” comparison to my reference system (bookshelf-based) as possible.

My initial impression is that these speakers are going to be a strong player in the budget market. They sound very neutral to me; I suspect they have a very flat frequency response. They are quite neutral if a little on the bright side. We’ll see if they mellow from a few weeks of workout in my home theater. I have not installed the towers and sub yet. The sub looks to be a good competitor for the venerable HSU VTF-2 Mk5 which is my reference sub. The Encore T6 towers have the same tweeters and 6.5” woofers as the B6 and C6, but obviously three of the woofers and a much larger enclosure. But while the cabinet is larger, it is designed from the same materials with essentially the same structural methods. I expect timbre matching and imaging to be quite good with this well-matched set of speakers.

Stay tuned for a full review coming soon.
