The requirements were simple: I wanted a mid-priced turntable that was less than $3,000. It needed to come with a hinged dust cover (because this will be a secondary system that won’t get used that much). It also needed to have better than average sound quality.

I found what I was looking for in the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab UltraDeck Plus M Turntable. This simple belt-drive turntable comes with a high-quality MM cartridge that is installed at the factory. MoFi also sent along a few of their analog accessories that I was able to evaluate, most notably the Super Heavyweight Champion dampening record weight.

What I didn’t expect was that this simple little turntable would seduce me with its incredible audio performance. This table can compete with my reference table and furthers my belief in a stark point of diminishing returns when purchasing equipment for a high-end system – the performance is high-end, but the price is not!
