For just $3000, you get HDR, DCI-P3 color, a motorized lens, and plenty of light output for any theater or media room.

The 5050UB sits atop Epson’s Home Cinema line of affordable high-performance LCD projectors. With a fantastic pixel-shift feature, it delivers Ultra HD resolution that to my eyes, looks no different than a native Ultra HD projector. Thanks to an all-glass low-dispersion lens and precise convergence of the 3LCD light engine, you can enjoy Ultra HD content with support for HDR10, HLG, and DCI-P3 color. A motorized lens makes setup easy and you can use the handy lens position memories to change aspect ratios on the fly.

I’ve just received one for review and after a quick install, I’m already impressed. Right out of the box, the picture is stunning in both SDR and HDR modes. The menu system has a myriad of options for tailoring light output and adjusting color. Not only can you choose between three bulb brightness settings, there is a two-position auto-iris and a 20-position manual one. I’ll be able to set light output exactly where I want it for my screen and environment.

New in this model is a 16-position HDR control that alters the luminance curve. This is super-handy when content is mastered to different peak levels or you just want to optimize image quality for your theater or media room. No other projector I’ve seen has such fine control. I’ll be spending many hours exploring the different menu options and working my way through as many Ultra HD movies as I can. Look for my full review with benchmark tests coming in a few weeks.
