Emotiva BasX S12 Subwoofer Preview

Emotiva started to roll out a new line up of affordable products a few years ago. This series of products was dubbed the “BasX” (pronounced “basics”).

These products are intended for people who want high quality sound reproduction but who don’t want to spend a fortune building their system. And the BasX products are designed to be simple to set up and use because they focus only on the most basic features required to perform the way you want them to. I love this part as it means the budget goes into better componentry and not into a bunch of typically useless bells and whistles that are there largely there for marketing purposes.

The BasX line started out with just a few pieces and now the series encompasses everything you need to build a modern, high quality audio system. They have stereo preamps, surround processors, stereo and multi-channel power amps, CD players, speakers, and powered subs. This is a thorough line-up that you can mix and match to your heart’s content.

So lately I have started experimenting with multiple subwoofers. Most room correction packages can do a decent job of calibrating a single sub but in many cases, room modes can be so strong that no amount of room correction can solve it. This effect is augmented when seated outside the prime spot. One major problem with multiple subs is the extra cost of the additional woofers. But with the Emotiva BasX subs, it is easy and affordable to utilize multiple subwoofers.

I will be working on a short technical article to discuss the benefits of multiple subs. I have chosen to use a pair of BasX S12 subs for this work. These subs are 12” slot-loaded drivers driven by 300 watt RMS Class D amps. I think they will work well for this experiment and their affordable price means the desire to install more than one is financially feasible for a lot of enthusiasts. Jim Clements

Jim Clements has been an audio nut since childhood where you could find him underfoot at his local high end store on most weekends. (This particular shop was within walking distance of Jim's home, much to the chagrin of the owner and his staff.) Jim's audio journey started early because he loved great music of all kinds. And he still does. Like most audiophiles, Jim was not particularly inspired by a vast majority of the audio systems he encountered. So his quest grew through his efforts to recreate a live listening experience in the home. This has proven to be a never ending quest. One major offshoot of all this is that Jim has become something of a cinema enthusiast as well. So now he's working on the video and surround sound conundrums too. Since perfect recreation of sound and video is a goal to be pursued but never attained, Jim derives his pleasure from the journey itself. He wants to help our readers on their own personal quests by reviewing products thoroughly and objectively. On a personal note, Jim is a Professional Engineer, licensed in California and Texas. He currently has his own engineering practice in San Antonio, Texas. Jim is also part owner of a small chain of craft beer growler stations in South Texas.
