The Denafrips Ares II DAC is one of the biggest internet faves ever hyped. Review after review praises its R2R technology, its “reasonable” $680 USD price, and its spectacular sound vs. far more expensive DACs.

So does the Denafrips Ares II DAC live up to the hype?

The question isn’t easy to answer and may be far more dependent on your associated equipment than the inherent sound of the DAC. Based on my initial impression, the Denafrips Ares II DAC doesn’t raise my system to the next level. It does have some specific virtues including a broad and deep soundstage, but also seems to etch the treble and upper midrange very slightly with my system.

Does this mean that all the other internet reviews are wrong? Not in the least! Different systems may very likely emphasize the Denafrips’ strengths while minimizing its weaknesses.
