B&W is offering well-heeled listeners a rather bold taste of the future with the Formation line of speakers.

Bowers & Wilkins Formation Duo

The line consists of stereo speaker pairs, a smaller single enclosure stereo speaker, a subwoofer and a Soundbar for AV use.

These speakers connect wirelessly using B&W’s proprietary mesh network that allows the playback of high-resolution files from your own storage available on your home network. The Formation Duo is compatible with Apple AirPlay2, Spotify and Roon. The Formation line also features a device called Formation Audio that lets you plug in any analog or digital source you may have, like a CD or SACD player, and send the content wirelessly to any of the Formation speakers.

B&W has the components for a whole house, fully synchronized audio system that to my ear outperforms any other wireless audio system I’ve heard. Getting this kind of quality is a major achievement by B&W, but it’s not inexpensive, even allowing for the fact that all the formation components include high-end amplifiers matched to their associated speakers.

I put the Formation Duos, the Formation Subwoofer, and the Formation Audio device through extensive testing in my home, and compared it to other speakers I had on hand. I listened to all kinds of music from rock to jazz to classical.

In a word, the sound from this system was astounding, and that was unexpected given the size of the speakers. In my upcoming review, I’ll tell you how B&W was able to pull this audio coup off and tell you what kind of listener the system is aimed at. More importantly, I’ll tell you if the Formation line of wireless products should be in your home.
