BenQ brings an update to its high-output value-oriented DLP projector stable with the TK850.

Putting out a claimed 3000 lumens it delivers Ultra HD resolution and HDR to multi-use media rooms. I’ve just received a sample for review and I’m looking forward to putting it through its paces.

The TK850 is the brighter cousin to the HT3550 I reviewed last Fall. It brings the same Ultra HD resolution and HDR as that projector but leaves out the expanded color gamut in favor of higher light output. In my tests, I measured roughly double the available brightness for both SDR and HDR signals; that’s quite a lot. The TK850 also includes 3D and its high brightness makes that a winning proposition. 3D is best enjoyed on a bright display and this is one of the best 3D projectors I’ve seen in a while.

Though it uses the same 245-watt lamp as the HT3550, the TK850’s color wheel is a four-segment RGBW design. This transmits far more light and by eliminating the filter used for DCI-P3 color, it puts nearly 270 nits onto my Stewart Filmscreen in HDR mode. That, coupled with DLP’s inherent sharpness and high motion resolution, makes for some killer HDR. I watched a few clips from Spears & Munsil’s UHD Benchmark and was very impressed.
