Before now, a projector capable of 3840×2160 resolution would cost you quite a bit of money. That ends today with the advent of this impressive new display. Packed into a lightweight, compact chassis, it offers support for 3840×2160 signals up to 60Hz with up-conversion of lower formats, along with HDR10 and 3D. And it sells for the shockingly-low price of $1499. I just received a sample for review and can’t wait to delve into its secrets.

To do the Ultra HD format justice, a display must have more than just 8.3 million pixels available. You also need HDR and extended color. The HT2550 fulfills the former requirement with HDR10 support and full calibration available for that format. Color maxes out at Rec.709 so I’ll be interested to see how that works. BenQ always delivers accurate imaging right out of the box so I’m sure their solution will be a good one.
3D has all but disappeared from the world of flat-panels, but BenQ continues to include it in all their projectors. With 2200 lumens output, the HT2550 should deliver a good experience. And that DLP chip with its superior motion processing promises zero crosstalk and blur-free action movies, regardless of format.

I’ve just upgraded my CalMAN software to version 5.8 and I’ll be using it for all the SDR and HDR tests. I’ll see you in a couple of weeks with my full review of the BenQ HT2550.
