Meinl 22″ MB10 Heavy Ride Cymbal

The Meinl MB10 series is one step away from the B8 in terms of copper content (it has 10% tin instead of 8%). This heavy 22″ ride cymbal has a bright ping with a modest wash and would work very well in any rock setting. The ratio of the ping to the wash is a bit too high for jazz, in my opinion.

The lathing is very fine, with light depth and regular spacing, indicating that it was done by CNC machining The bell is not lathed. Hammering was performed by hand, but using a machine to place the hammerstrokes.

The spectrum shows a preponderance in the upper frequencies at 6 kHz – 10 kHz, which is why the ping is very forward with the wash (6 kHz and below) staying somewhat in the background. The spectrum declines beyond 10 kHz out to 50 kHz. With jazz, the ping should be just above the wash, and that is why I recommend this cymbal for rock music only, and it is definitely powerful enough for Metal.

The attack is immediate, with the decay a bit slower (i.e., the modest wash I mentioned) than with the 22″ MB20 Heavy Bell Ride cymbal that we reviewed in these pages.
