Meinl 20″ Soundcaster Fusion Powerful Crash Cymbal

Meinl’s Soundcaster series is one of their top lines. They are B20 bronze, with elegant hand hammering and lathing, and the surface has one region near the bell that is hammered but not lathed, while the outer region is hammered and lathed, so you get three playing surfaces including the bell (which is not hammered or lathed). It comes in the Brilliant finish, and is a sure fire attention-getter both in looks and sound.

You can see in this close-up photo that the bell is not hammered or lathed, the region near the bell is hammered but not lathed, and the outer region (where the logo is located) is hammered and lathed. The lathing is very fine and regularly spaced, indicating CNC (machine) lathing.

The crash has peaks at 300 Hz, 390 Hz, 2.9 kHz, which give the cymbal its tonality. The spectrum is flat out to about 10 kHz, and then it declines to 50 kHz. The sound between 30 Hz and 6 kHz does not decay very much in the 2 second test sample (you can see this in the Level vs. Time spectrum), but above 6 kHz, decay is rapid.

It’s a gorgeous-sounding cymbal that can be used as a ride as well as a heavy crash (i.e., Metal bands). For the sound sample, I have included a crash, ride on the outer region, ride on the inner region next to the bell, and ride on the bell itself.
