Synopsis

Officer Jack Stone purposefully orchestrates a bank robbery in order to be thrown into prison with the notorious Russian kingpin, Balam. Balam is more than just a mob criminal, he’s a very cunning and dangerous lord who controls the police force from behind bars. Balam lives in prison as a cover for his real power, which is King of the city. His cell is a lavish private room built specifically for him, inaccessible to most in the depths of the prison structure. Even the warden fears venturing into his area of the prison. However, even surrounded by his loyal henchmen and guards in his sectioned off fortress, Balam doesn’t know Jack is coming for him to avenge his family, whom Balam murdered in cold blood. Balam is tough…but Jack is tougher.

Commentary

This is a movie for when it’s a rainy Saturday afternoon…and you are bored. The action sequences are plentiful and well choreographed. The acting is better than you might suspect while the story is your typical “fight your way outta prison” scenario. With all of that being said, I still found the film to be enjoyable enough to hold my attention to the climactic fisticuffs ending. Surprisingly, Lundgren is not the protagonist here, but plays a supporting role. Like Stallone, he’s beyond his best years as a lead, but does a descent job as an undercover FBI agent. Liddell plays the mob boss, but his “cauliflower ears” give away his actual career. Still, his Russian accent was believable as were his acting skills. The storyline as a whole moves quickly and there is enough action sequences to keep you from nodding off on the couch.

Technical

The picture and sound quality were very good for a movie that must have been shot on a budget. Dark scenes are lit well enough to give plenty of depth and detail. Surrounds and sub are engaged often. Dialog is clear, even above the riots. Like the acting, this film looks better than you would expect.
