Mission Impossible 3 – 4K UHD Blu-ray Movie Review

Synopsis

Lured back into action by his former agency superiors (Crudup and Fishburne), Ethan Hunt must face-off against a sadistic weapons dealer (Hoffman). When his adversary captures his wife, Ethan is placed in a moral dilemma. Did I mention that Ethan also has a micro explosive implanted in his head and it is set to go off in a few minutes? Can he save his wife in time? And can his team save him before all is lost?

Commentary

Abrams is now the third director of this franchise, but I liked his style and direction. Yes, Ethan gets married, and who knows when he found time to court a lady, but it does add to some of the tension in this film. Having people you love get exposed to some very bad people seems like an obvious reason to stay a bachelor, but here we go. Hoffman plays Owen Davian, an arms dealer that has not qualm in killing anyone that bothers him. After Ethan kidnaps him (via the “mask” trick), Davian vows revenge on Ethan, and promises to hurt his wife. Abrams actually opens the movie with Ethan tied to chair across from his scared wife as Davian counts to 10. This precursor sets the tension for the movie right at the very start, and it only grows with time. There as some of the usual insane stunts performed by Cruise and the twisty ending is fulfilling fun. After the tepid second installment, the team is back!

Technical

Picture quality and sound are very good. Once again, the contrast is generally excellent and makes some of the scenes look 3D. colors pop and flesh tones are natural. Details, like stubble, sweat and cloth material all look superb. Sound is aggressive and dynamic. This is an upgrade from the BD, but it had a 2K DI, so most of the upgrade is seen with the WCG. Those with 15-inch sub woofers will not be disappointed.

Jim Milton has been interested in high fidelity since his college years in the late 70's. It was there that he first became interested in classical music. He has been part of choral music, both in opera and oratorio and is an avid collector of classical music from the Baroque through the Romantic periods. He enjoys an occasional night at Boston Symphony Hall or attending an organ concert at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, ME. Currently he is the director of Nuclear Medicine at the North Shore Medical Center, located just outside of Boston. He also serves as an adjunct professor for Salem State University where he teaches a course in nuclear instrumentation. During his leisure time, he enjoys listening to his music collection and an occasional movie with his wife of 30+ years. Living on the longest stretch of sandy beach north of Boston offers him plenty of opportunities to take a relaxing stroll or soak up some sun.
