SECRETS Best of Awards 2017

SECRETS is pleased to announce the Best of Awards for 2017.

The Editorial Team spends several weeks debating and considering, which is challenging, as every year SECRETS has an opportunity to review great products across the many audio and video components and some products are truly outstanding. It is to the outstanding products that we award the SECRETS Best of Award.

The 2017 SECRETS Thumbs-up Awards recognize the products that we found to be excellent and which we, as SECRETS, would recommend to any buyer. So the SECRETS Thumbs-up Award is SECRETS Recommended!

Every year we review and love many products that do not receive awards. Just check out the reviews and the opinions of the SECRETS reviewers: we have the pleasure of reviewing many outstanding products.

In 2017 we have selected a “Product of the Year”, of course. And we have added two new awards: 2017 Speaker of the Year and a very special award, the Audio Xtreme award.

SECRETS has not awarded the Bad Ass Award in 2017. Remember, this award is not given out every year and is reserved only for products that test outrageously well. John Johnson, Editor-in-Chief, initiated the first SECRETS “Bad Ass Award” in 2010. This award is selectively conferred on products that have intense output, ultra-low distortion, substantial build quality and/or extreme engineering. So the “Bad Ass Award” is given to the product that is outstanding and clearly evokes a Bad Ass response from our team…“you just know it when you see it!”

Product of the Year

At SECRETS, a “Product of the Year” is a product that not only sets the bar for its category, it is a product that we believe will inspire real innovation and progress from its competitors. We consider new technologies, performance and value; and when a component excels at all three, we afford it this prestigious recognition.

Speaker of the Year

SECRETS is announcing a new award in 2017: SECRETS Speaker of the Year. Speaker of the Year recognizes both outstanding technical performance and a hard-to-define, elevated emotional satisfaction; the joy and pleasure the product achieves. “You just know it, when you hear it!” We are proud to honor this inaugural year’s recipient accomplishing “high-end” sound for a mid-priced budget.

Speaker of the Year

GoldenEar Triton Reference Loudspeakers

I offer no rhetoric, no extraneous wit or hyperbole in my simple and honest admiration for the T-Ref as these are top to bottom, first class reference quality speakers. The GoldenEar Triton Reference Loudspeakers are aural satisfaction at its finest: not simply excellent sound reproduction but soulful, engaging and sublime musical art.

Audio Xtreme Product of the Year

Top that off with the solid build quality and great aesthetics Sonus faber is known for and you have a very impressive overall package.

Best Digital Music Player

NAD Master Series M50.2 Digital Music Player

The M50.2 is a no-brainer for value compared to the idea of setting up a computer and storage, software to control ripping and file arrangements, easy integration into a home system, excellent dynamic sound and functionality. I believe what NAD has developed in the M50.2 Digital Music Player is the ideal solution; a computer in a hifi component accessed from a tablet, with my music organized, easily accessible, and sounding great.

Devoid of any noticeable distortion, these are certainly some of the cleanest sounding Hi-Fi speakers that I have ever experienced in my home.

McIntosh D1100 2-Channel Digital Preamplifier

The McIntosh D1100 2-Channel Digital Preamplifier takes McIntosh’s rich heritage and classic design and pairs it with a truly modern set of digital inputs as well as a fully functional DAC that can decode just about any digital format currently available. The more I wrote about the music I listened to, the less I talked about the McIntosh D1100 2-Channel Digital Preamplifier. That is really the highest praise I can give to an audio component. Listening to quality music through the D1100 brought me a level of involvement and joy that I have not experienced in a long time.

Movie Awards

Every year our SECRETS Movie Review Team reviews almost 100 movies and 2017 was no exception. We review movies released in Blu-ray format (not DVD) and in 2017 we added many more 4K UHD movies. There is always a lively discussion among the reviewers about the awards and this year the 4K UHD discussion raised the question of what movies are really true 4K. Jim Milton, Senior Editor, offered the following comments as we closed in on the “winner” of the 4K UHD Award…

“If true 4K is the hallmark, only about 1 in 5 movies are in true 4K. A film shot in 3.4K is still over twice the resolution of a 2K blu-ray. HDR and wide color gamut make most of the 4K release so special, not just the resolution alone. Blade Runner: The Final Cut is the choice, but Logan gave an excellent color and black/white presentation demonstrating how wide dynamic range can make even B/W movies look astonishing.”
