GoldenEar has been quite busy on the subwoofer front as of late.

Using the same genetic Bouillabaisse that spawned the thoroughly enjoyable SuperSub XXL, GoldenEar has come back with an even smaller, yet still filling dish called the SuperSub X. This new sub looks, for all the world, like it’s bigger brother had been exposed to a shrink ray. I daresay it’s almost cute!

GoldenEar SuperSub X Subwoofer - Inside View

The GoldenEar SuperSub X follows the same design principles as the XXL, with two horizontally opposed long-throw drivers working in tandem with two vertically opposed passive radiators. The drivers being 8 inches in diameter while the passives are 10.5 inches by 9.5 inches. These are powered by an internal amplifier with a claimed 1400 watts of power, all tucked into a box slightly smaller than a 14-inch cube.

Initial Impressions:

While diminutive in stature, the SuperSub X is heavy for its size and solidly constructed. The design and glossy black finish are handsome to look at and should be quite agreeable to spouses, if that is a concern. Due to the nature of their design, the SuperSub X coupled best with my room using the same placement that I had worked out for their bigger brothers last year.

I already know that this sub will not plumb the below-20Hz depths that some people look for in a subwoofer. But if they sound as accurate and tuneful as the XXLs did, with a reasonable level of output, then I would consider that a win. Their size alone begs them to be used in multiples for more uniform coverage and lower distortion. I can already tell you that they seem to successfully “punch above their weight.”
