I’ve just received BenQ’s new i500 LED Smart Projector for review. It’s a compact portable DLP display with an LED light engine rated at up to 30,000 hours.

It also sports a smart interface and integrated WiFi that can stream video content from the Internet. While this sort of thing is commonplace on HDTVs today, it’s the first projector I’ve seen with the feature.

By simply pressing the remote’s Home button, you can bring up an app-based screen that pulls video in from multiple Internet feeds. Apps can be downloaded and added to the suite which allows the user to build their own suite of content channels.

Smart Interface

On first glance, mainstream services like Netflix and Amazon seem to be absent but there is plenty of content here for me to check out.

The i500 uses a short-throw lens for easy setup on a living room coffee table. You can project a 92-inch diagonal image from only 3.5 feet away. Built in speakers feature five-watt amps for convenient audio from sources connected either wired or wireless. You can also use their Bluetooth function to stream from a phone or other mobile device.

I’ll be running the i500 through my usual battery of video benchmarks as well as some extensive movie-watching in both 2D and 3D formats. Check out my full review of this cool new compact projector, coming to Secrets in a few weeks.
