Commentary

As the movie begins to unfold, we see Plankton who is at the moment using many different tools to try and once again get his hands on the Krabby patty secret formula. Plankton manages to disguise his way into Mr. Krabs’s safe and has finally gotten what he has been so desperately trying for ages to get. Spongebob manages to wrestle it back, but then things quickly go from bad to worse-and in the most unlikely of events, Spongebob and Plankton must team up in order to rescue the Krabby patty formula. The original cast members consisting of: Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Bill Fagerbakke, Rodger Bumpass, Doug Lawrence, and Carolyn Lawrence voice Spongebob, Mr. Krabs, Patrick, Squidward, Plankton, and Sandy and provide the audience with gufaws and succeed at reminding us why we liked the show in the first place. Banderas stars as Burger Beard the pirate and plays his part with (hamburger) relish. My son who is in college still likes watching old SpongBob episodes on Nickelodeon. Secretly, I do too. The main theme here is “teamwork”. Overall though, I felt as an adult, that the movie was nothing more than an extended TV show and found that it was taking a bit too long to get to the climax. Younger kids might get restless. Only the last 15 minutes had our characters running around on the L.A. beachfront in 3D. Still, if you are a big fan of the cast and crew of Bikini Bottom, you and your pre-teens will want to see this colorful and humorous film.

Technical

The picture and sound quality were quite excellent. Lots of vivid color and detail are seen throughout. Sound was clear and the effects from the surrounds really enhanced the overall quality of the film. There were even a couple of well done explosions, so your sub won’t feel left out of the party. The cartoon portion displayed super sharp details and the 3D characters looked…well…3D.
