Ant-Man - Blu-Ray Movie Review

This movie is a small wonder as it came to theaters a bit under the radar. Our anti-hero (pun?) is an average guy just coming out of prison for being a cat burglar. He has no real “super” ability other than he is a quick thinker. Dr. Pym has discovered a particle that allows the wearer of a special suit to shrink to the size of an insect while retaining great strength AND has the ability to control entire ant colonies. This comes in handy as Pym needs Lang to don the suit and sneak into an impenetrable building to destroy the shrinking technology that is being sold to the military and other nefarious characters.

The climactic battle between Ant-man and Yellow Jacket is quite entertaining with a mix of excitement and humor. The humor actually makes all of this work and it reminded me of the first Ironman movie. Some of the physics involved in this film is a little bit off, but no more than any other super hero movie. Great acting also propels the story and makes the characters memorable. Douglas turned 70 on this set and he still has fine acting chops (he is really starting to look like his father, the late Kirk Douglas). This is a movie that you will want to watch again, so I recommend it as a purchase over a rental. Be sure to stay for the closing credits, too. Bring on the sequel!

The picture was shot digitally and looks great. There is an Atmos track, too, I you have the setup. My fear with miniaturization techniques would be that they would look badly, but that is definitely not the case here. I thought people getting punched by the hero would just be faking the fight scenes, but you can actually see Ant-Man flying through the air and landing punches. That is how good the detail is in this film. When has Marvel ever let us down? Surround sound and bass are expansive and deep. This is a fine demo disc for your home theater. A 3D version was included with my Blu-ray as well. Nice!
